The Power of Light

Help stimulate the body to heal using non-invasive Infared light therapy.

WHAT IS LASER THERAPY? There are a few different types of lasers used for pain relief. At Moderni Spine I use a class 3b laser which uses infared light as well as red light LEDs. This type of laser is under the umbrella of LLLT- Low level laser therapy.

LLLT, also known as cold laser therapy, is a non-invasive treatment that uses low-intensity lasers or light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to stimulate healing and relieve pain. It has been shown to be effective in managing various types of pain, including musculoskeletal pain, joint pain, and neuropathic pain. LLLT works by targeting the affected area with specific wavelengths of light, which then penetrate into the tissues. These photons of light stimulate cellular activity, promoting tissue repair, reducing inflammation, and relieving pain. See my video below for a basic- drawing explanation I created of how this works.

One of the key benefits of low-level laser therapy is its ability to provide pain relief without the use of medication or invasive procedures. This makes it a safe and non-addictive alternative for individuals looking for natural pain management solutions. Now, for those of you who know me, I enjoy other procedure options such as injections that may have anti-inflammatory benefits, protective benefits, or function restoring benefits. Performing these procedures not only allow me to utilize my skills as a practitioner but also have benefits in specific ailments. However, cold laser therapy gives another option if these procedures are something that people are trying to avoid or give us a powerful multi-modality treatment option which can definitely help with long term results.

WHAT TYPES OF CONDITIONS CAN LASER HELP? LLLT has been used to effectively alleviate pain associated with conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, tendonitis, and even post-surgical pain. It can help to reduce inflammation, swelling, and muscle spasms, allowing individuals to experience improved mobility and function. It can help prolong or avoid the need for surgical interventions as well.

HOW COLD IS THE TREATMENT? Although being called "cold" laser therapy there is really no temperature to the treatment. You actually may feel a slight warmth as the tissues become stimulated from the treatment. "Cold" laser refers to a laser that doesn't heat tissues such as comparing this to a higher power laser that is able to cut tissue during surgery.

WILL I NEED ANYTHING ELSE? Low level laser therapy is a versatile treatment that can be used in conjunction with other therapies or medications. As I mentioned above, it is often utilized as a complementary treatment option alongside physical therapy, chiropractic care, or medication to enhance overall pain management and accelerate healing. LLLT has gained popularity due to its non-invasive nature, minimal side effects, and the potential for long-lasting pain relief. It is important to consult with a healthcare professional to determine if low level laser therapy is a suitable option for your specific pain condition.

Not only are there so many conditions that LLLT can help with, but all these conditions can also be very different from each other in terms of pathology (how the tissues are injured or diseased) and what treatment course and options are best for the injury.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS DO I NEED? Since everyone and every ailment is so different, I try to stay away from giving a "one size fits all" type answer. I prefer to take treatments as individual plans and work with your body's natural response. In studies when looking at a bell curve on patient responses, it tends to be around 11 treatments in which people are at max improvement. That being said, many people have improvement after 1-3 sessions, and there is a possibility some may take longer than 11. The biggest decision on my end is to really see how your body is responding and continue to change the treatment dosage until we are getting the results we need.

HOW LONG ARE THE TREATMENTS? Depending on the treatment area, the dosage or laser protocol, the sessions may last anywhere from 2-10 minutes. They are completely comfortable (non-painful). The benefit of this is you don't have to carve out a huge gap in your day to receive treatment and you can go back to what you were doing (such as work) without any painful impact.
